How To Do Wet Exit From Your Kayak

Learn how to get out of a capsized kayak in this video. This is called a “wet exit.” First, make sure the grab loop of your spray skirt is on the outside of the cockpit combing. So, you’re about to go over—take a quick breath before you go under. Let go of the paddle and duck your head by leaning way forward. Now you need to get your spray skirt off. Slap your hands on the sides of the boat then run your hands up the cockpit combing till you get to the grab loop. Grab the loop and extend your arms out, then, using your elbows to brace off the deck, peel back the spray skirt and make sure it’s fully released from the cockpit all the way back. Now place your hands on the boat behind your hips, take your knees out of the thigh braces, and push. Your head will come out of the water on one side of the boat—it’s kind of like taking off a big pair of plastic pants!

How to Rescue Yourself When Kayaking

After you’ve done your wet exit (see related video) get hold of your paddle and your boat so the wind doesn’t take them away. Get your paddle float, which you stored in an easily accessible place. Put one leg into the submerged cockpit so that you can keep both hands free without your boat getting away from you. Inflate the paddle float and slide its sleeve over the paddle blade and secure it to the paddle shaft with its clips. Now flip your kayak back over by reaching under the water and pulling the far combing towards yourself while pushing on the near-side combing. Position your paddle perpendicular across the boat, with the paddle float acting as an outrigger. Give a kick and pull yourself up, keeping your weight low and spread between the boat and the paddle float outrigger. Pump out the water using your bilge pump and put the spray skirt back on the cockpit combing.
